Sometimes I Go To Pieces is a textile construction that started as an experiment but developed into a completed piece. It is on display at the Rotunda Gallery.
I was playing with painting or dying canvas, working both wet and dry, pre-washing or not. I ultimately tore the canvas into strips, allowing the frayed edges to remain. The black canvas required many layers of paint to have enough contrast to show up against the paler pieces. I loved the way the layers piled upon each other to create a piece, although not large, only 50×15 inches, had a hefty presence.
I worked on larger pieces in different colors using this same technique, but none worked as well as this. Sometimes, one and done…any others don’t cut it…from the studio
Love the name of this one!
I now try to title my pieces with something light and memorable. I like to bring a smile to people when then look at my work. Sue
