Textile Manipulation Techniques: Insights from ‘ENFOLD’

ENFOLD…textile sculpture…20x28x8

A textile sculpture in my wrapped series…linen, embroidery, rope wrapping, smocked silk, burned upholstery fabric, felt, wood, metal supports.

I pondered for a long time over the shape of the sculpture I would work with…in the wrapped series, but not too strongly wrapped. I love working with linen and various upholstery fabrics, manipulating each piece in a way to make it special. Many of the fabrics I collect are recycled, so I have a good supply of various weights and textures. I can adjust each piece to what I need by supplementing it with embroidery or paint or cording or quilting. This piece contains no quilting, as I find I am moving away from it a bit as a surface treatment. I know I will utilize it again, but only where it adds a necessary element to the artwork. There are just too many ways to manipulate textiles…many more for me to explore. I have become very interested in smocking to add texture to fabric. I used it many years ago in a few home decor pillows, but haven’t used it in my artwork. In this sculpture, the smocking is simple…more like gathering…but in another piece in the wrapped series, it is more complex.

Here are a few closer images of the sculpture…which element is most appealing to you in this piece?….from the studio
