The PAPERITAS were a direct result of a recycled art weekend in Silver City. At the time, I had my gallery, YELLO on Yankie, and each gallery was asked to participate and, of course, I enthusiastically agreed. The event was a month away and I thought it would be easy to come up with a recycled art piece. Little did I know that I would have a VERY difficult time…I just wasn’t coming up with anything that satisfied my artistic vision.
About a week before the event, I collected some items from around the studio…just parts and pieces. I liked the idea of working with newspaper and after playing around, I started to create folded strips to weave. I use weaving in my other artwork, so it was a natural go to. The form of each weaving developed rather quickly…now to paint the newspaper and do a few embellishments with other paper items and beads.
I used a piece of pipe and a dowel rod to hold the “dress”, cut up a chunk of scrap wood and used a wooden ball for her head. Viola! I became fascinated with the process and made another and another. All three found homes that weekend. Two more…

I applied the technique of paper painting and weaving again in 2020 to a larger wall hanging…NEW MEXICO SUNSET…from the studio
