Iterative Painting Process: Creating Unique 6-Inch Squares

This is a picture of last night’s work. I have been working on painting 6 inch squares to use in a piece for an upcoming submission. The painting has gone through a few iterations to get to the point it is today. To create the block, I paint the background of the fabric in a variety of whites and then hand paint…freely…the shapes within each piece.

At first, I painted the background fabric very completely…full coverage…but found, by accident, that I preferred a more skip troweled look. I will use both backgrounds and intersperse them when I join the pieces for the completed project. I think you can see the difference between the two in the photo below.

To date, I have painted over 100 blocks and plan to do many more. I hope my plan for them works as I imagine…still just in my head, not quite tested in reality yet, but I have faith in my vision….from the studio

A closer look at one square…
