This is the image I used to tease this quilt a while ago. It was completed and shown at an exhibition in May, but I forgot to give you a few more details as to its construction.
I started by painting a cotton fabric using a combination of various reds and oranges so that I would have a full bodied red…nothing flat. By adding the skip troweled black at the top and bottom, I contained the red and gave the finished quilt a frame to sit within.
Just a few of the many pieces I painted…the ripples iron out quite well.

The next step was to quilt the fabric in strips, to be assembled side by side. I began at the edges with black thread, meandering to various heights on each piece.

Next, I quilted the center of each strip with red thread, hoping to create texture…letting the thread melt into the fabric. Before assembling the quilt, I mixed the cut strips so that the black “border” was irregular.

The finished quilt shows the sections connected to each other with a separating fold of fabric. The addition of the bead and cording competes the scenario…ROJO….from the studio
