Creative Over-the-Door Art: Stunning Totems in Blue

IMPRESSIONS I…6x36x2

It’s been quite busy…a bit of travel and a lot of artwork! The Corrales gallery requested two “over the door” totems with blue being the predominant color. I’m more a warm color person and artist, so it took me a while to first print the fabric and then try to assemble the totem in a pleasing fashion. The above piece is strong and active, so wrapping it with cotton strips was too much. The turquoise leather cording fit the bill perfectly. I love the knots with the swirling ends of each caressing its neighbor.

RINGS ‘n THINGS II…6x48x2

RINGS ‘n THINGS II is longer at 48 inches and can be placed above a patio door, a flat screen tv or on a soffit in the kitchen or elsewhere. This piece is much softer in color and uses a little gray to let the lighter blue pop and dominant the color scheme. I really like this piece! I wound and rusted some fencing wire to use as a wrap, held on by leather cording. I spot sprayed some black on the rusted pieces and then coated them with a clear satin acrylic spray so that there was no shedding of the rust onto the fabric. I added a few other things…rust dyed organza, some hand stitching and a swirl of canvas off pieces. This piece took a lot of time and a lot of work, but it was worth every minute to achieve this result.
