Where does a painting start? First in my process, just general, quick , basic colors..

At this point, I know I want sky, ground and sunrise colors. I just need a wash of paint to give me some guidance and divide the canvas…approximately. I’m not too concerned at this point…nothing definite….rather messy.
Once dry, I start to fill in some ideas…light cloud shapes, a bit more sky color…will the sky be a stronger blue or gray or both???

Now it’s time to make some decisions and move on to the main focus of the painting, the mesas. At this point, I try to get the painting close to complete. I usually wait a day or so to review and clarify some areas by adding more detail, subtracting some detail, strengthening colors or just “smoothing things out”. It is almost done…

I needed to refine a bit to reach an image I feel comfortable with…a little softer…finished!!
