These two new totems are available at Art Space Gallery in Corrales, NM. It is a lovely space with beautiful work… I am pleased to have my artwork as part of this gallery. The horizontal piece above, INTERWOVEN, was requested by the owner to be placed above a doorway. To my surprise, it looks really good there. Do many people even think of hanging artwork above a doorway? After seeing the piece installed, I came to the conclusion that this placement invites the viewer to look up and pause before moving into the next space. I made the piece 36 inches wide to nestle comfortably above most door frames.
My second totem, INTERTWINED, is elegantly tall at 48 inches. I dyed and printed many fabrics with acrylic paint and chose those that truly complimented each other in a vertical format. Each is generously free motion quilted to add a beautiful rhythm and texture. This totem has a bit more depth of color than INTERWOVEN. Although it is composed of lighter fabrics under the weaving, it is still very grounded by the darker pieces toward the bottom. I truly love the discharged black piece just under the bottom of the weaving…wish I had more of it. I need to spend a day discharging soon.. I have three more totem supports waiting to be adorned and I love the contrast the discharged black fabric provides.
