From 3D to 2D: Transforming Recycled Materials

Recycled weaving and zipper strip…new painting

Finished this piece today…12×24…untitled as of now. I did the painting a few days ago, but was unsure of the wrap, but knew it needed something different. I was waiting for inspiration….

On to this morning… I decided to take apart a 3D piece, a basket, I did a while ago…seven years ago to be exact…wanting to modify the armature to use in a new fiber sculpture.

This basket was one of the first pieces where I used weaving as a primary design component. As I dismantled the weaving, I realized I could recycle the felt pieces for a weaving component with this painting. The zipper strip came along for the ride…exactly what this piece needed. I love the metal of the zippers against the painted, riveted, metallic side of the painting. The weaving reaches towards it saying “come hither, age with me”.

This was the progression today:

The zippers were cut off in pieces, unable to be used again. The armature was cut and reimagined today, ready to support a new fiber sculpture.

Now I just need a title…..any suggestions?….from the studio

  1. As usual, I love this piece. The copper colored area makes me think of ostrich skin, I think the zipper pieces work well but an idea for a title…? All wrapped up, all zipped up?
