Exploring

woven wire, cheesecloth, yarn and waxed linen basket on a stand

In prepping for my studio residency next week, I promised myself to explore what I can do with different materials in addition to my fabric, sewing and simple weaving of zippers or fabric strips. To move ahead, I knew I needed to somehow support the fabric if I wanted a 3D object and, of course, I opted to try a wire random weave organic shape. The wire I used for this piece was a 16 gauge annealed steel…a bit harder to bend and shape than was really necessary, but I didn’t realize that until I continued weaving wires of varying gauges and materials. BUT, I learned a lot and loved the outcome…the rusted wire showing through the cheesecloth. I made a second basket using this technique and am thrilled with the outcome. I will be making more in the future, but to continue my challenge to myself, I did different woven wire fabric baskets and wall hangings…more soon.

Black hands, sticky fingers, a bit of yarn and waxed linen thread and ANEMONE was born. I like the presentaion of this piece on the stand, but the basket does as well sitting on its own. Your choice….from the studio
